Vertical Process Engineer "Thin-to-Thick Film Technology"

At TNO (Job)

TNO at Holst Centre works with a range of thin-film technologies, originally developed for display and electronics applications, that have very interesting potential in the fast-growing domains of "Biomedical Electronics". Examples include optical and ultrasound imaging and Organ-on-Chip applications.
In these applications domains, TNO at Holst Centre works closely with the, local and international, ecosystems of start-ups and scale-ups as well as with other TNO departments such as Unit Healthy Living (HL) on the development and application of thin & thick film technologies in functional devices.
Thin film process technologies employed to realize new functionalities in these domains include metal sputtering, spatial atomic layer deposition (sALD), (PE)CVD, and nano- and micro-scale structuring of materials via e.g. photolithography and/or replication technology (moulding, nanoimprint). A clear need from the Biomedical Domain is the need to realize and integrated thicker (in)organic films in Biomedical Devices in order to enable new device functionalities and/or improved performance
For this fast-developing domain, we are looking for a vertical process engineering to strengthen our process engineering team and extend our capability to translate functional device specification into tangible integrated process flows based on the type of process technologies mentioned above.

Job description
You will join the Thin-Film Electronics team to develop and realize the department's program and project portfolio in the domain of "Biomedical Electronics", leveraging the department's strengths in thin and thick film process technology and related technologies. Your daily activities will be varied since you will join a multidisciplinary team that executes multiple programs and projects with company partners and European consortia in parallel. Technically, the work will entail actual cleanroom processing of devices, while detailed alignment will be shaped with the broader "Biomedical Electronics team' in order to (i) co-develop integrated process flows of a multitude of subsequent process steps, and (ii) analyse the proposed flows with respect to the functional specifications and (iii) optimization of these process flows.
You have affinity with building out a new promising technology domain and have several years of hands-on experience in (vertical) process engineering in various settings. Preferably, you already have some background in thin film technologies and the application of these types of technologies in biomedical applications. You will work closely and coordinate with colleagues in the Thin-Film Electronics team and other TNO groups in Eindhoven, and with colleagues in other parts of TNO.

Your main activities will be to
• Develop new integrated process flows for the realization of biomedical devices; test and analyze the developed process flows versus functional specifications
• Support the technical program roadmaps and projects involving 'Biomedical Electronics'
• Interact with customers and team members to align on requirements vs. process development
• Support validation of developed prototypes

Your Profile
• MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Physics, Nanoscience or related discipline with a proven affinity with thin-film technology.
• 3+ years experience in technology development, preferably in a cleanroom
• Pro-active and critical attitude towards analysis of thin-film processes with clear goal in mind
• Hands-on and taking responsibility, able to organize (practical) work in an efficient and cooperative way.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
