In 2014, in collaboration with Philips Research, we demonstrated the world's first flexible X-ray detector prototype for medical grade X-ray imaging applications. We made use of solution processed organic photodiodes, which have an extremely low dark leakage current density of 10 pA/mm–2 at room temperature. Using an industrially scalable slot die coating process, a blanket layer of organic photodiodes was deposited on top of high mobility, high resolution (200 ppi) metal oxide thin film transistor backplanes on foil. This results in lightweight, thinner and more robust X-ray imaging sensors compared to conventional amorphous silicon-based X-ray detectors based on glass substrates.
